When you’re tackling a Class Alpha fire in berthing and you can’t reach the seat of the fire directly but you do have access to the compartment, you use a direct attack from inside the compartment. The goal is to deliver water straight to the burning area as close to its base as possible, even if that means applying the stream from the doorway or from within the space. This direct application cools the fuel and knocks the flames down quickly, reducing heat and preventing rapid spread.

Indirection would delay knockdown because it relies on cooling or sweeping the flames from outside the immediate seat of the fire, which isn’t as effective when you can get into the compartment. Ventilation helps with smoke removal but doesn’t suppress the fire as rapidly as a direct attack. So, the best approach given access to the compartment but not to the seat is direct compartment access to perform a direct attack.
